Capote

Finally managed to catch this movie today. I had been waiting for it to arrive at a theatre I frequent and this past weekend it did. I only really knew the premise of the movie going in, author goes to small town to document a murder trial. That’s about all I knew. I had heard of Truman Capote, but didn’t really know anything about him other than he was an author.

Assuming you enjoy truly good movies and go to movies that are more than popcorn/chick flicks on occasion, this movie is definitely a must see. Philip Seymour Hoffman is a phenomenal actor and nailed his role. This is kind of a hard movie to describe, the movie documents what an author went through to write a book and I’ve gone and added that book to my wish list on Amazon. I’m not sure if this’ll win best movie/picture or whatever, but Hoffman better win best actor.

As good as this movie is, I’m not real sure how it’ll do when it comes to repeat viewing. But you better see it once.

When a Stranger Calls

I headed out last night and saw the movie When A Stranger Calls. Earlier in the week I had watched Final Destination 3, so my expectations for this second “horror” movie in week were sufficiently low. I never expect much from this genre, but usually end up enjoying them for either their intended purpose (to scare me) or for their unintended purpose (to make fun of). Seeing as how Final Destination 3 had kinda of been a bit disappointing, I didn’t expect much.

I was actually pleasantly surprised. Now by no means I’m I saying go watch this movie now, but they did take a pretty basic formula and churn out a movie that kept me entertained for nearly 90 minutes. It was short, but I’ll just assume that they kept it short because they didn’t have anything else that was decent to add, and realized that, making it a very wise move. If they had tried stretching this out another 10 or 15 minutes, it probably would have been painfully bad.

Well worth watching at some point in time if you like a horror movie every now and then. Put it on your Netflix queue or catch it on HBO (or whatever) when they’ll likely be playing it quite a bit this Halloween.

Final Destination 3

Just got back from watching this movie. Now I didn’t expect to be wowed, I just looking for the corny, bad, horror movie. Even with those expectations, it is still kinda a mixed bag when I try to decide was it good or not. The first 2 Final Destinations were alright. I had to give them credit for originality in the way they would “off” the various characters. But I just didn’t think they managed to keep their level of creativity up. I don’t know if it is the novelty has worn off after two movies, or now, having seen Saw and Saw 2 (which I have to give kudos to for creative ways to torture and kill people) that there is just a higher level of creativity I demand now.

I guess I’ll just say that if you enjoyed the first couple Final Destinations, you’ll probably enjoy this one, just don’t go drop $10 at the theatre. Probably just bet to wait for it on Netflix. It’ll be there in a month or two.

Sci-Fi Movies

I’m a pretty big sci-fi fan. I read a lot of it and sometimes enjoy the movies that come out about it (The Matrix was good, the sequels bad). Found a nice little article on the net about the best sci-fi movies we’ll never see. Here’s a link to it. I especially like the idea for a Snow Crash movie. I read the book a while back (high school I think), and thinking back to it, it would be a pretty kick-ass movie.

Fantastic Four

Watched Fantastic Four last Friday. Can’t honestly say that it was fantastic, but can’t say it is horrible either. Just your average action movie that happened to be based on a classic comic book. Took me a while to realize that the blond was Jessica Alba. She just didn’t look right with blond hair. Don’t think I recognized anyone else on the case. Can’t say a whole lot about the movie. Nothing too original, but I was entertained while I watched the show. I guess my verdict would be this movie is worth a rental. Anyway, that’s it for now.

War of the Worlds

This review contains spoilers… you’ve been warned…

It was a toss up between seeing this and “the Smiths”. This started fifteen minutes earlier so I choose this one. It is an average summer action flick. Lots of stuff get’s blown up and new ways to vaporize people with fictional weapons were shown. What pissed me off the most is…. here comes the spoilers… the way the aliens are defeated. How lame is it that they just up an die!!!! Second thing that really pissed me off… the big cities seem to pretty much get vaporized, but then the people they are traveling to are somehow untouched and unfazed in Boston. His son magically made it there first with no explanation about how. For popcorn flick prowess, this movie rates a matinee ticket. However, you might leave the theater pissed off about the ending. I know I did. i think they pretty much ran out of ways to blow stuff up and said “ok, it is time to end the picture, so lets do it NOW”.

Cinderella Man

I’ll start by saying I’m not a big fan of Russel, but he has done some decent flicks. Same thing for Ron (I didn’t see his brother who is in most of his movies). All in a all, a good movie. You manage to forget its Russel, Mrs. Chesney does a good job of playing his wife. It was nice to see a good boxing flick, especially some old school boxing. Well worth a matinee price.

Longest Yard

Short Review… It was back to the more basics for Sandler. I think he had enough of the serious acting or comedies with too much plot. Enough story to keep me interested. Enough comedy to keep me laughing. And just enough Chris Rock. Even that Cowboy receiver did a good job, didn’t realize it was him ’till I saw the credits. Well worth a matinee, probably an evening admission if you enjoy a good Sandler flick.

Batman Begins

I managed to avoid all of the hoopla surrounding this. Didn’t really watch the previews (although I did see them, if you know what I mean), didn’t go digging for info or anything like that. It was originally going to be an adaptation of Year 1, and then it was changed to what it was, and I found that a little disappointing since I’m a big Year 1 fan.

Having seen the movie, I would say wow. Great job adapting Batman to the big screen. Excellent job on the back story and showing the turmoil he deals with walking the fine line between super-hero and vigilante/criminal. A was definitely adverse to the Batmobile shown in the previews, but seeing how he acquires it, it makes great sense. Same with just about all of his gadgets. I thought they did a good job keeping the character count down (a huge problem with later Batman flicks). Scarecrow was done differently, but was well done. It took me a little bit to figure out who he was. Ra’s was also well done. I didn’t know much about this character going in, but I like him. It was also great to see the Asylum introduced, loved that bit. All in all, very happy with this movie. Well worth an evening admission (or two if you like the real Batman)!

SW EP3 – The Abbreviated Full Review

Finally getting a chance to update my blog… first thing on the list, my SW review. In a nutshell, best of the new trilogy. It contained the story we’ve been waiting to see. Very well done. Would have been better if they could have avoided the scenes between Anikan and Padme (she’ll always be Padme to me) since the two of them can only act when they are with others. Or maybe it was their lack of dialog or entirely too much direction. Anyway, I enjoyed it a lot.

My question is this… Why couldn’t they have crammed the first two movies into the first hour of the EP1 and then started this story then. The new trilogy would have been soooo much better.
