First Person Footing

I now have access to a GoPro camera and strapped it onto my wrist yesterday while taking a couple short runs just to see how it’d work. The water wasn’t the best and the stretches of calm water were short due to there being several tubers in the area, but I did get a little footage.

First Person Footing
The videos’ in HD… feel free to bump up the quality and/or make it full screen…

And in keeping with the Pearl Jam backing music in the videos, here’s a video Ron Scarpa’s Watersports made a while back. Great footing and a great song.

Spring Wind Down – well, kinda

A Day at the RSWS

Here’s a nice video showing the fine people at Ron Scarpa’s Watersports in action as they teach some new footers how to foot and some old footers some new tricks. Mr. Paul Macdonald, among others, makes an appearance as well.

Fun times had by all at RSWS!

The hardest part I have about watching these video made by people at the barefoot schools is looking at the water. First, they are in Florida so there’s Gators in the water. Up here in Wisco, all we have are some real big fish, but nothing that’ll bite an arm or leg off. That bit about the Florida water scares me just a little bit. Probably not enough to keep me out if it, but it’ll definitely be in the back of my mind when I’m in it.

Second, 95% of the water is butter in these videos and the rest is still really, really calm. I see water like that maybe once a year and IF I’m lucky, I’ll be the only boat out there. 50% of the time, the water I foot in, most people won’t. 25% of the time the water would be nice except for the 5 or 6 other boats making waves as the pull their kids tubing. 15% of the time there is good water and only one or two other boats. The other 10% of the time, the water is rough enough where even I won’t try to foot.

Even They Catch a Toe…

…or a heal, or just fall over.

But one thing is true, the more spectacular the tricks that are being attempted, the more spectacular the falls can be. So here are the likes of KSO, Small, Groen and many others at the WBC showing the world they are indeed human in this video that the WBC put together.

Barefoot Crashes and Smashes

I like the one where the guy backfoots into the weeds.

Real Men Do Back Deeps Naked! [nsfw]

Well, it’s official. The UW-Madison Water Ski Team can do more than just the traditional 3-event skiing… they know how to barefoot too! This video features some pretty good footing in your typical wetsuits, some very brightly colored wetsuits, some drysuits, a speedo (unfourtunately) and cowboy boots, and even  some not so bright people that don’t realize the importance of a wetsuit. Granted, there isn’t anything major and they’ve done their best to pixelate out some parts, but you probably don’t want to have this up on your screen at work. You’ve been warned.

The video also features a classic water skiing song that I previously mentioned on this site.

Invasion of the Barefooting Mutants

Yes, this was stolen of the Creaky Rowboat site, but we serve different portions of the skiing world.

Also, I know I’ve been a bit absent lately. With the end of summer, the end of fall, and the boat being winterized, I’ve been a bit depressed. But I did get a dose of skiing in just this past weekend at Project Snowflake (that’d be me in the 3-high pyramid on the right side). I’ve a got a few other story ideas for the upcoming weeks that have been cluttering up my bookmarks toolbar and inbox, so stay tuned.

Double Elimination – JJ Link versus Mike Netzer

Well, here’s the first video (a Tales from the Foot exclusive) from the 2010 Clean Lakes Festival Barefoot Challenge. After some great action shots to start the video, it features the runs it took to determine the Barefoot Challenge champion.

JJ Link versus Mike Netzer - Starting Off

The final pairing of the challenge featured Mike Netzer facing off against JJ Link. Mike Netzer entered the final pairing with one loss already, having come back through the loser’s bracket and was facing off against JJ Link, who hadn’t lost yet. For those that don’t know, that means for Mike Netzer to win the Barefoot Challenge, he needed to beat JJ Link twice. For JJ Link to win, he just had to beat Mike Netzer once.

Yet somehow, they still needed three runs to determine the winner…

Clean Lakes Festival Barefoot Challenge – 2010 Finals

Please excuse the shaky camera in the video. My video editing program actually did a hell of a job making it less shaky (you should have seen it before I processed the video.) The water was rough, the video camera was hand held and I was holding the video camera in my right hand while holding the still camera (that took all the pictures you’ve seen here) with my left, all the while trying my best to keep them both focused on the barefooters, keeping the video camera as steady as possible and taking a steady stream of still pictures in an effort to capture the moment that someone falls. Did I mention I was in a boat that was going 40.5 MPH that was driving in a TIGHT figure-8 pattern. Given the conditions, I think I did pretty well on both accounts. I hope you’ve enjoyed the pictures and like this first video.

Ditch Footing Again

Videos of people barefooting in ditches continue to make the rounds. This video is from March of 2009, so it isn’t new, or related to the current flooding issues in southern Wisconsin, but it’s still fun to watch people do crazy, stupid things. I don’t recommend trying this at home (but if you do, send the video my way) since it truly is very dangerous. Enjoy…

Ditch Footing

Footstock is Coming Up Aug 21-22

The granddaddy of figure-8 tournaments is a little less than a month away now. I don’t know if it is the oldest figure-8 tournament, but it is definitely one of the biggest. I haven’t seen a new promo video for the tournament, but did run across this old one.
