Glen Plake, an extreme downhill skier innovator, recently visited Keith St. Onge at the World Barefoot Center to do some barefooting. Be sure to read the whole story on Chicago Now.
About 1 month ago (Nov 1-6), the World Barefoot Center run be Keith St Onge and David Small (both world champion barefooters) held a women’s week at their school. In a sport normally dominated by men, this week the school was overrun by women.
Karen Putz (previously featured here) attended a did a story for Chicago Now. Be sure to read it and check out all of the pictures. There are also links to her personal blog in the story with even more details from the week.
The Carolina Show Ski Team is doing it again. For the 33rd consecutive year, they are hosting the New Year’s Day Barefoot Challenge. They’re asking for everyone to come brave the cold water to raise money for the ski team (granted it’s not as cold in North Carolina as it was in Madison) but in all honesty, once the water drops below 50 degrees, its just really cold.
For more details and the entry form, be sure to check out the team’s website.
The Mad-City Ski Team just held their 2nd annual Project Snowflake this past Saturday. They performed a water ski show to raise money for the UW Children’s Hospital. Now, you ask, what’s so special about doing a water ski show? Well, the Mad-City Ski Team is from Madison, WI and in December, there is typically snow on the ground and this year was no exception. From 6pm the day before till 6pm the day of, the entire area was under a winter weather advisory, but they still did their show, amongst the freshly fallen snow. And they even did a little footing…
For more details about the event, be sure to check out the team’s website for more pictures and videos from the show.
Well, it’s official. The UW-Madison Water Ski Team can do more than just the traditional 3-event skiing… they know how to barefoot too! This video features some pretty good footing in your typical wetsuits, some very brightly colored wetsuits, some drysuits, a speedo (unfourtunately) and cowboy boots, and even some not so bright people that don’t realize the importance of a wetsuit. Granted, there isn’t anything major and they’ve done their best to pixelate out some parts, but you probably don’t want to have this up on your screen at work. You’ve been warned.
The video also features a classic water skiing song that I previously mentioned on this site.
Invasion of the Barefooting Mutants
Yes, this was stolen of the Creaky Rowboat site, but we serve different portions of the skiing world.
Also, I know I’ve been a bit absent lately. With the end of summer, the end of fall, and the boat being winterized, I’ve been a bit depressed. But I did get a dose of skiing in just this past weekend at Project Snowflake (that’d be me in the 3-high pyramid on the right side). I’ve a got a few other story ideas for the upcoming weeks that have been cluttering up my bookmarks toolbar and inbox, so stay tuned.
