Evolution of Show Skiing Dance

At the Wisconsin State Show Ski Tournament, the highest scoring act for Mad-City, the highest scoring comedy act and the highest scoring act of the entire tournament was done by one man. Mr. Adam Schaller. He’s got a little dance routine that proves to be quite funny. Many people know the Evolution of Dance. Well, that’s what we did, but we put a show ski twist to it. Same premise, but we incorporated a lot of the songs that Mad-City has used over the years for our various dances. So presented here is the Evolution of Show Skiing Dance from our National’s show. It is almost the same as state, just a little bit shorter, and sadly, a couple less songs. Enjoy.

The Jaw Dropper (It is even Awesommer!!!)

At Nationals, Mad-City won the highest scoring jump act award (in addition to a National Championship in 2006). Typically, this goes to a large jump team doing a lot of multi-person jumps. Not this year. This year we had the Jaw Dropper. One man and his driver were responsible for it. We sent Mr. Paul O’Conner over the ramp three times. Boat barely left the show course. Crowd LOVED it!!! Here is the video from YouTube.

Awesome

For those that know show skiing, you know what I mean. For those that don’t, this is a slick act and worthy of the title to this post. I mentioned this in my Nationals Recap, now someone has posted video. Enjoy Wonder Lake’s Prefabricated Pyramid Hot Pick/Thread the Needle… Worthy of the highest scoring pyramid act at Nationals.

Sports Blogs

When it comes to sports writers, I usually know the basics about what happened… I watch too much ESPN. I like to get the more off the wall observations, interesting trends and just unique perspectives. The three sports links I have to the right are written by three of the most entertaining and informative writers I have found. I don’t always agree with what the say, but I’m always entertained.

Bill Simmons writes about once a week or so for ESPN. He writes about lots of different stuff, so it is hard to really classify, except to say it is sports related. He does weekly picks of the NFL games and has his wife do them too.

Dan Shanoff now has an independent blog that is now on blogspot.com. Previously, he did the Daily Quickie on ESPN. He writes daily about everything sports. I don’t always agree with him, but he usually presents a different view from what I’m use to. He does a quick overview of what happened yesterday and what’s coming up.

Gregg Easterbrook is the final writer listed. He writes a column called Tuesday Morning Quarterback. His column has bounced around for a bit (ESPN to Football Outsiders to NFL.com) but is now back on ESPN. He writes a recap of the past weekends events in the NFL and keeps track of a lot of off the wall stats. He also likes to do research on the NFL cheerleaders and conveniently provides links to the best pictures. This is a column I look forward to each week. Unfortunately, it usually comes out about lunch on Tuesday, not the morning… he writes too much.

That’s it for now. Just thought I’d share why they are listed on the right. Check them out. If your reading this somewhere besides blogspot.com, come visit my blog.

If you have some other really good sports writers to check out, let me know.

Footing? Rough Water? No Problem

At times, I’m a gluten for punishment… In water that some people were hesitant to jump in, I decided to do some footing. Specifically, some flyers off the dock. I do a lot of footing on my own, but really can’t practice flyers on my own time due to local ordinances (something about not suppose to ski off of docks). Anyway, back in August, on the 24th I believe, Greg Dixon (a photographer from the area) was down taking pictures of the handful of us that turned out for practice on this dreary Thursday night. He sent me copies of the pictures he took of me and some of them turned out really. He has this crazy big lens that is more or less a telescope. He took most of these pictures from 75+ yards away. Let me know what you think. And yes, I did make it. Two flyers and four deeps, all in very rough water.

Dane County Board Recognizes the Mad-City Ski Team

On September 7th, the Dane County Board recognized the accomplishments of the Mad-City Ski Team. It’s not quiet the US Olympic Committee or a trip to the White House, but it is important to be recognized as a postive influence in the local community. I’ve included a picture of Dane County Resolution 109, 2006-2007 below. Click on the image to see a bigger version of it.
Here are links to the Dane County Board and the calender packet for the 9/7/06 meeting (the resolution is on page 7) where this picture was taken from.

The Protector

Caught this movie this weekend. Didn’t know much about it other than it was a kung fu type movie and Quentin Tarantino had something to do with it (I saw his name in the commercial, think he help produce it or get it released in the US).

Like I said, I didn’t know much about it. The plot can be summed up as there are people raised to protect elephants for the king. One of these elephants is stolen. The guy charged with protecting it goes to retrieve it. Lots of action ensues.

Like Kung Fu Hustle (IMDB), I loved this movie. (Hustle was better, but this was just as much fun to watch, just not as intentionally funny.) Tony Jaa, who plays Kham the lead character (The Protector) likes to break bones, and he breaks a lot of them. He doesn’t seem to kill a lot of people, but he does leave them with lots of injuries. Many of them permanently debilitating. By the end of the movie, I couldn’t help but to laugh each time he broke a bone. He didn’t just break a bone on each person, it was typical two or three bones, and sometimes more. Crack, Crack, Crack! I couldn’t stop laughing.

If you like kung fu movies, you’ll love this. Enough plot to have a story and lot and lots of action.

And for those of you that are fans of Kung Fu Hustle, there is a sequel coming out.

NFL Contracts and Hold Outs

So, I’ve been wanting to write this for a while. Javon Walker did it and pissed me off. Branch of New England is doing it now and pissing me off and I don’t even care one iota about New England. I’m know there are a let of other players that have done this, but these are just the ones that came to mind first.

Every year some random player has a big year, decides he is playing better than he is being paid and decides to hold out and demand more money. This pisses me off. They are under contract and should honor it.

Now, you’re first words out of your mouth to come back at me is “but the teams can cut them at any time?” Yes, but that is beauty of the NFL. The have to keep playing at their high level to keep making money. It is what separates the NFL from the NBA and MLB. They have guaranteed contracts and players just don’t care like they use too.

I believe that the vast majority of teams are going to re-up these players’ contracts before they expire and they are going to be very handsomely paid. Until then, these players need to realize that the team they are playing for gave them a chance to play and signed them to a contract that nearly every NFL fan would consider a very lucrative contract. The team took a gamble on these players and paid them a lot of money to play a game. Some times the teams win on these gambles and the players play a lot better than they are being paid, but more often than not, they are getting paid a lot more than their play would warrant. If they keep playing at their high level, they’ll get paid.

Sometimes the players do get signed to fat contracts and end up sucking. They get cut. Player doesn’t get the rest of his contract, team usually has to eat a big chunk of their signing bonus in salary cap space. Yes this part of the game, but it is part of the NFL, you play or you don’t get paid.

Now, I’ll whole heartedly except hold-outs when one thing occurs. When I see the first player signed to a lucrative contract that has a bad year and comes back to the team and says something to the effect, “Hey, I sucked last year, I wasn’t worth the 4 million you paid me last year. Instead of my 4 million this year, just pay me a mil and we’ll call it even. And Mr GM, I’ll play better this year.”

When that day happens, any player that wants more money can hold out to their hearts content. Until then, play. Play like it’s a contract year. You’ll make more money than most people dream of.

Finally an Eight

Well, tonight was the perfect late summer night (notice I didn’t say fall, I won’t accept it yet.) I hit the water with John and Seven. Was probably still in the upper 70s when we hit the water at 530. We made our way to the bay and were greeted with near glass water. In addition to a beautiful night, the wind was very calm. Barely a breeze.

I hit the water first, did a set of 6 runs back and forth across the bay. Did some one foots. Nothing special.

John and Seven then took their turns. John did his typical big one foots, lifting a foot almost above his head. Seven’s footing has improved drastically. Beginning of the summer I would hope not to break him as he did deeps behind the boat. Now he actually looks somewhat comfortably doing a deep now. He even improved from the beginning of the night to the end.

I was up again, and deciding to make use of the calm water, decided to try a figure eight again. John drove. Started with a deep, then John went into a turn to the left, putting me on the outside. I held my spot on the curl. Made my way through the rollers in the middle as we crossed the wake. Then we started the turn to the right, putting me on the inside this time. I was again managed to hold my spot, cutting hard with my feet, putting pretty much all of my weight on my left foot. Made it through the second corner clean. Hit the rollers in the middle for a second time and that’s when I finally fell. Made an eight. The night was officially worth it now.

Next up, John did a loop. Then I did 1.5 loops around the bay. John then another loop. Then I did another loop. Needless to say, I was tired by the end of the night.

As the sun set, Seven took a slalom run.

Truly, a great night for skiing. No wind, warm, pretty much no one else in the bay. Can’t ask for better skiing conditions in September in Wisconsin. Here are a few pictures from tonight.

Did they mean to rip off the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy?

Bistromathematics. The Onion continues to impress with the news reporting skills. In one of their most recent stories they talk of scientists successfully splitting their bill. This story was reminded me of a portion of Life, the Universe and Everything (a book in the Hitchhiker’s trilogy) where their only way to power some portion of the space ship was to use “bistromathematics” or something like that. So besides just the story being very entertaining on its own accord, whether or not they intended, the unreferenced story makes it even better for me.

Oooooh yeaaahhhh!I wish the Macho Man Randy Savage would just go away.

Aliens gave us Tivo? Seems like we have uncovered the origin of Tivo and its ubiquitous sound. It came from space. Now I use a ReplayTV (much like a Tivo, just better) but this is just too interesting to not pass along.
