2010 Barefoot Figure-8 Series

Chris Mcwatters, along with some others, have organized a Figure-8 Barefoot Series that encompasses several popular figure-8 tournaments that take place throughout the country this year. The goal of the series is to encourage footers to compete at more of the tournmanets with a point system to determine the footer of the year. Results will only be taken from each footer’s 3 best tournaments, so if you miss one, or just face plant one, you’ll still be in the running for footer of the year.

The four figure-8 tournaments in the 2010 Series are:

  1. Footapalooza in La Porte, Indiana on June 12-13 (visit barefootski dot com for more details)
  2. Glen Meuller Annual Figure-8 Barefoot Tournament at Lake St Louis on July 24-25
  3. Clean Lakes Festival Barefoot Challenge in Madison, WI on August 28 (visit the Clean Lakes Festival website for more details)
  4. WBC Barefoot Figure-8 Championship in Winter Haven, FL on Oct 16 (visit the WBC for more details)

For more details about the series, be sure to check out the Facebook Group, the flyer for the series and  the rules and regulations. Also be sure to watch barefootski dot com for more announcements on the series.

Finally, some of the event websites are in the process of being updated. If they look out of date or just don’t have much in the way of info yet, just check back later for updated information.

Footing, Redneck Skiing and Kneeboards

These are all things you’ll find in Brad Paisley’s the video for one of his newest song’s titled ‘Water’. I’m not a huge country music fan, but the song just sounds like summer to me. If you watch closely, you’ll see a little bit of barefooting in the video. Unrelated to the footing, I especially like the part where the guy rides a bike off the dock, attempting to go into the water, but instead rides into another dock. Ouch. And yes, I’m talking about that redneck skiing, the one where they use something like a back hoe in the middle of what amounts to a large puddle of water and swing people around in a circle on skis. I think that’s a  little crazy, and people think getting dragged behind, or next to, a boat at 40+ MPH hour is crazy. So to each their own. Now enjoy a little bit of summer time music…

Brad Paisley – Water

Did you know that Brad is married to Kimberly Williams-Paisley? Not sure who that is? She was the daughter in the Steve Martin movies Father of the Bride I & II and also on According to Jim (as Jim’s wife’s sister). So when he’s out on his boat, skiing, footing or whatever he does, he has some good company in the boat. And good company is always important. Especially at the end of the day when the sun goes down at it’s beer-thirty.

Mr. & Mrs. Paisley

It’s also nice to see our little sport, and the sport of water skiing in general, in the mass media, and a Brad Paisley video qualifies as that. I think every waters skier around remembers the Alan Jackson video for Chattahoochee since it featured some slalom skiing in it.

Alan Jackson – Chattahoochee

I personally love the neon colors on his life vest and how he is really cutting it up on what appears to be some classic Dick Pop Jr skis in some of the shots.  I also love the old Nautique in the video.

And while we’re on the topic of country music video’s featuring water skiing, I’ll throw one more into the mix. It doesn’t necessarily tie directly to skiing, but it does features such lines as:

It was painted red, it’s stripe was white
It was 18 feet, bow to stern light…

As he reminisces about his childhood boat.

Alan Jackson – Drive

And with that, country music video time is over, for now…

Best Dam Barefoot Race 2010 Results

The results are in for the 2010 Best Dam Barefoot Race held earlier today (May 15, 2010).

After lots of wind in 2007, a little less wind in 2008, then way too much wind in 2009, so much that they delayed the race by a day only to run it in 40 degree temperatures, the weather gods finally smiled on the race as weather was near perfect in Beaver Dam, WI. At race time, the temperature was near 60 degrees, is was partly sunny and just enough breeze to let you know that there was wind. The lake behind Dawn & Woody’s Moonlight Bar was nearly glass.

waiting for the horn to sound

Shortly after 11am, the boats idled out to the starting line and about 11:10am, the horn sounded and the 5 boats took off with their barefooters in tow.  In two falls that likely impacted the final results, Aaron Schoezl, a past Footstock Figure-8 Champion, fell on his deep water start. One other footer also quickly fell, but their identity was a mystery to those of us on shore (update – per Mike Miller in a comment below, it was Mark Mahan that fell.)

and they’re off

And with that, the boats disappeared behind the point as they raced northeast towards the far end of the lake. After about 8 minutes, we heard from one of the spotter boats that the first wave of footers were passing them. About 15 minutes into the race, we heard from the turn-a-round boat that four boats were already on their way back towards the finish.

As the race timer ticked towards the 27 minute mark, we could hear the roar of some of the boat motors as they raced back towards the finish line. As the timer crossed 27 minutes, the first boat, Team Mahnke, appeared past the point and raced across the finish line with a time of 27:12.

As the winners fished their final footer out of the water and cracked open their first celebratory beers, another boat, Team Mahan, made it’s appearance around the point, turning towards the finish line, when their footer fell. They quickly turned the boat around and put the handle back in the footer’s hands as another boat, Barefoot Central’s Team, appeared from behind the point. Team Mahan with their footer on the end of the rope, quickly took off towards the line, finishing with a time of 28:13 and they were followed quickly by Barefoot Central with a time of 28:24. The fourth boat, Hotfooters, finished 49 seconds later with a time of 29:13.

Team Manke enjoying their celebratory beers

After a 22 mile race, the top four teams were separated by a mere 2:01.

Back to the falls from the beginning of the race… Aaron Schoezl’s team, took 3rd behind the Mahan Team by 11 seconds. If Aaron or Mark don’t fall, they both likely contending for first. The initial pickup probably cost them about 45 seconds, maybe  a little more, maybe a little less. Those falls put them about a minute behind the eventual winners.

Update: One last note… Team Mahnke was also hampered by an 8-cylinder engine running on what they thought was 6, so they didn’t have nearly the speed that they are use to. It was fine for the initial start, but after that, they just couldn’t get the same speed. Even with the handicap, they were still able to win the race.

Here the the final standings after the race:

  1. Team Manke – 27:12 (Bob Mahnke, Luke Bruchner, Chad Mietz, Paul Stokes, Mark Donahue)
  2. Team Mahan – 28:13 (Mark Mahan, Rob Christenson, Chris McWaters, John Debelak, Mike Miller)
  3. Barefoot Central – 28:24 (Chris Van Zealand, Aaron Schoezl, Scoot Reed, Lucas Twelemeyer, Jamie Kumlien)
  4. Hotfooters – 29:13 (Mike Peterson, Gary Slawny, Dan Weinberger, Marci Holtz, Dave Strobel)
  5. Team Hughes – 44:22 (Tommy Schmidt, Andy W., Shane Hughes, Chad Behl, Tyler Sweeney)

LA Night Jam III

I know it’s not a barefooting event, but it is a water skiing event done right. Big crowd, great atmosphere, awesome jumping. That’s a recipe for success. I personally haven’t made it down to the event yet, but a good friend made the trip and was definitely impressed. So even though its not footing, I’ll still be a tiny little promoter for it because it is that cool. Watch the promo…

You’ll get to see some jumping like this…

So if you happen to be in the Tri Lakes, Zachary, Louisiana area come Saturday, June 5, make the effort to attend the Night Jam, you won’t be disappointed.

Ice Footing

The boys (and girl) from Beaver Dam suited up early this year, hitting the water on March 21st this year. The lake had thawed just enough so that there was open water on one side while ice covered the rest. With the exception of Sarah who just wore  a shorty, the rest suited up in their drysuits doing their best impressions of the Stay Puft Marshallmellow Man to enjoy a bright sunny day on the still very cold water.

Cold Feet

The air on this day was in the 40s while the water was dangerously close to freezing. Be sure to watch all the way to the end where you see why you don’t go out on thin ice.

Thanks for the video Tommy!

You’d Think This Post Was Off Topic…

…but it’s not. You’ll need to read all the way to the end to find out why.

First, lets look at some behind the scenes footage of the Red Bull Depth Charge. Now you’re asking, what’s that? Well, it was the world’s first UNDERGROUND wakeboard event. They used a mine from 1864 that had since flooded with a whole lot of water, installed some features and put up some lights and whala, they had themselves a wakeboard course set about 120 feet below the surface of the earth.

Red Bull Depth Charge

Next up is the Dew Tour Mastercraft Wakeboard Rail Jam. One would think they’d hold a wakeboard event in a lake, right? Even in the Red Bull Depth Charge they were in a lake, granted is was underground, but still, it was a lake. The Rail Jam, they held it in a parking lot… on pavement… and built some really big pools. And by big pools, I mean ginormous (gigantic * enormous = ginormous) pools. In word, they were big. But not so big that if they jumped too high or too far, they might just hit pavement. Be sure to watch this one to the end because they managed to find a guy to explain everything for you.

Dew Tour Mastercraft Wakeboard Rail Jam

By now you’re wondering why are there two wakeboarding videos posted here on a barefoot site? One might be OK, but two? Seriously? [just watched me some SNL] Well, both of these events had one Mr Peter Fleck involved in the planning of them. Who’s Peter Fleck? This guy…

That is Peter Fleck as he appeared some 26 years ago. It’s also this guy…

peter_fleck.jpg (42417 bytes)

He’s had a lengthy career as a barefooter, skied professionally in ski shows and has even competed at Footstock in recent years. He also helped plan both the Depth Charge and Rail Jam events. In addition to everything he’s done on the water, he’s done a lot of stuff off the water to help promote the sport of water skiing and all is various disciplines, even wakeboarding. Here’s the video that was played at the Wisconsin Water Ski Hall of Fame induction ceremony in 2009. It highlights some of the things he’s done both on and off the water.

Peter Fleck Wisconsin Water Ski Hall of Fame Induction Highlight Video

Hopefully you’ve taken the nearly 30 minutes to read this short article and watch these three videos. Two highlight some spectacular water ski events and one highlights a truly spectacular water skier who helped make those events happen.

First Person Perspective

AreaMike of Barefoot Ski Dot Com posted another video using his GoPro video camera. I have to give some props to provide a new perspective on video to me. I don’t think I’ve seen first person LONG LINE deep water videos before. Thinking about it, I haven’t seen about half of this perspective before and I’ve done hundreds, if not thousands of deep water starts… I’ve realized that I close my eyes until I’m on top of the water sitting up. Here’s one of his latest videos showing this unique perspective.

More Cold Water Footing

What I think would be interesting to see is someone that can do the sick freestyle tricks strap one of these cameras to their chest and give us a first person perspective of jumping out boats, side slides, dolphin starts (that could be really challenging with a camera on your chest, overhead 360’s, etc. I’ve got a feeling that those videos would like induce motion sickness in a lot of people… still be fun to watch though. Someone out there needs to make that happen.
