First Person Footing

I now have access to a GoPro camera and strapped it onto my wrist yesterday while taking a couple short runs just to see how it’d work. The water wasn’t the best and the stretches of calm water were short due to there being several tubers in the area, but I did get a little footage.

First Person Footing
The videos’ in HD… feel free to bump up the quality and/or make it full screen…

And in keeping with the Pearl Jam backing music in the videos, here’s a video Ron Scarpa’s Watersports made a while back. Great footing and a great song.

Spring Wind Down – well, kinda

A Day at the RSWS

Here’s a nice video showing the fine people at Ron Scarpa’s Watersports in action as they teach some new footers how to foot and some old footers some new tricks. Mr. Paul Macdonald, among others, makes an appearance as well.

Fun times had by all at RSWS!

The hardest part I have about watching these video made by people at the barefoot schools is looking at the water. First, they are in Florida so there’s Gators in the water. Up here in Wisco, all we have are some real big fish, but nothing that’ll bite an arm or leg off. That bit about the Florida water scares me just a little bit. Probably not enough to keep me out if it, but it’ll definitely be in the back of my mind when I’m in it.

Second, 95% of the water is butter in these videos and the rest is still really, really calm. I see water like that maybe once a year and IF I’m lucky, I’ll be the only boat out there. 50% of the time, the water I foot in, most people won’t. 25% of the time the water would be nice except for the 5 or 6 other boats making waves as the pull their kids tubing. 15% of the time there is good water and only one or two other boats. The other 10% of the time, the water is rough enough where even I won’t try to foot.

Even They Catch a Toe…

…or a heal, or just fall over.

But one thing is true, the more spectacular the tricks that are being attempted, the more spectacular the falls can be. So here are the likes of KSO, Small, Groen and many others at the WBC showing the world they are indeed human in this video that the WBC put together.

Barefoot Crashes and Smashes

I like the one where the guy backfoots into the weeds.

Sad, But True

Off Topic… This looks a little bit staged, but still, it’s a man at a hockey game… and yes, it was a Friday… and since this is April Fool’s Day, lets see someone making a fool of themselves in public.

Friday at a Hockey Game

And since it is a Friday, and this is a Friday related post, here’s Dallas Friday on a boat…

Yes, she’s a  wakeboarder, but I’ll let anyone in my boat that loves to be on the water… just as long as they save some glass calm water for me to do some footing on. It helps if they can drive the boat… anything else is just a bonus.

In Trouble for Water Skiing

Off topic… A man is in trouble from Australian authorities for spending the day water skiing with his son on the Victoria River. The authorities have an issue with it because he wasn’t using a boat. He was towing his son with a helicopter.

A quote from the article…

Blooby nanny state. For gods sake get a life or get back under your rock you bunch of kill joy grannies. Piss off and let people be themselves, get a life or take the next plane out of here. Wankers.

I found this story via Slashdot. Read the full story here (it even has a little bit of video). I’m sure the creative writers over at The CRB will come up with a witty article about this.

Calendar Updated for 2011

Take a moment and check out the calendar on the site. Lots of events have been added for 2011. If you have a barefooting event that you want listed, send it to wedge [at] talesfromthefoot [dot] com.

I’m anxiously waiting for the Madison lakes to melt so I can get my boat in the water for that first run of the year. The weather hit near 50 here today, which will work some wonder on that sheet of ice covering Lake Monona.

We’re Back…

Sorry for the technical difficulties you’ve been experiencing trying to reach the site. In the beginning of February it was migrated to some better hosting, but during the move, I forgot to update the hostname for the database. It’s similar to have a great TV to watch stuff on (WordPress), but no movies to watch (the database).

Technical jargon aside, everything is all good now… except for the fact that my lake is still a solid. As in, it’s surface (the part I find most useful during the non-winter months) is currently a rather solid sheet of ice.

Frozen Lake Monona

Admittedly, that picture is a few years old, but the lake is in a very similar state today. Hopefully, sometime this month (if Mother Nature cooperates) or very early in April I’ll be back on the water.
